Job Description

The Mechanical engineer will provide hands-on technical support for the growing softgoods development portfolio for the mounted and dismounted warfighter. An emphasis will be on materials development. The engineer will be supporting programs for the Tank and Automotive Research and Development Engineering Center (TARDEC), Natick Soldier Research and Development Engineering Center (NSRDEC) and other government organizations.

Essential Job Functions:

As part of an interdisciplinary team, assist in development of electro-textile materials and components. This work will require extensive hands-on lab work working with fabric tooling, executing integration plans, performing material synthesis/production and developing test plans. Material analysis activities will include electrical testing, mechanical tensile testing, optical property analysis and differential scanning calorimetry.

Working with our system engineering team, the materials engineer will provide guidance and perform research to qualify new adhesives, shielding materials and EMI coatings. Analyze products and processes for compliance with several material regulations utilizing manufacturer information, detailed designs, data manipulation tools, engineering best practices, and other varied sources of information. Testing responsibilities will include operating in-house environmental chambers and working with vendors to conduct environmental durability testing.

Work with design team in the selection and approval of materials and finishes in new designs. Work with limited supervision, and take ownership of project to achieve schedule, financial and technical goals as assigned. Up to 15% travel required.

Job Requirements

Due to the sensitivity of customer related requirements, U.S. citizenship is required.

B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a Materials focus with related materials engineering experience.

Must have a DoD SECRET Clearance.

Desired Skills:

Self-motivated and possessing good communication skills, especially in creating technical documents for an audience with limited technical background.

Desire and ability to work as a member of multidisciplinary teams.

Demonstrated problem solving skills and ability to perform root cause analysis and corrective action.

Adaptable and willing to work in a fast-paced environment on varying assignments.

Working knowledge of reading and interpreting engineering drawings.

Solid understanding of materials, including production processes and characterization methods.

Experience working with design and development to identify and / or qualify materials and processes.

Extensive knowledge of thermoset and thermoplastic polymeric materials and their use in various engineering applications as adhesives, sealants, potting compounds, coatings, films, and fibers.

Experience working with woven and non-woven textiles.

Understanding of corrosion mitigation and controls.

Proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word / PowerPoint/ Excel / Project).
